Eligible undergraduate students planning to stay at Caltech during the summer may participate in their House summer room pick process or the unaffiliated lottery to receive a summer assignment. Students wishing to pick into an affiliated space with their house are not required to submit this form, but must follow the room pick procedures as set by their house. Students wishing to pick into an unaffiliated space must submit this form by May
12, 2009 in order to be guaranteed Caltech housing.
Summer Lottery Numbers will be posted online at
www.housing.caltech.edu/undergrad,
and in the Housing Office front window on Thursday, May 14th.
Most Caltech undergraduate housing spaces will be available for summer
except for the following locations which will be closed for renovations or summer conferences:
555 Catalina
Braun House
150 S. Chester (approximately 10 apartments closed for
summer conferences)
In some cases, people will be displaced from squatting in Braun and the 150 S. Chester apartments, but they will be able to pick before other "non-displaced" picks in the Lottery. Displaced squatters from these locations will be picking in the following order based on their lottery numbers within each group:
-
Displaced squatters from Braun
-
Displaced squatters from 150 Chester
-
Unaffiliated summer lottery participants
Two double rooms in each of the North and South Houses and
Avery may be designated as summer storage and held out of the room picks process.
CONTRACT DATES
The full summer housing term is between June 14, 2009 and
August 21, 2009. All students must specify their housing start and end dates on the contract. A minimum of one month, which falls within the summer housing period, is required for all contracts. Housing past August
21, 2009 will be available only to students with a signed Fall 2009 housing contract, or on the guaranteed housing waiting list. Contracts will be available at the Housing Office, building 86. A signed contract is required to hold all summer assignments.
Contracts not submitted by Monday,
June 1, 2009 will result in cancellation of the room assignment.
MANDATORY ROOM MOVE PERIOD
Summer residents who have a Fall 2009-10 Housing License
Contract filed, or are on the Fall 2009-10 "Guaranteed Housing
Wait List" as specified by the Housing Office, must move into
their Fall 2009-10 housing assignment between August 22 & 23, 2009 if
the housing assignment is different from the Summer 2009 housing
assignment.
AFTER SURF PERIOD
STORAGE INFORMATION-(August 22 through September 24, 2009)
If
you will not be staying after the SURF period and would like to
leave your belongings in your fall room during this 5-week
period, you may do so without charge. Please keep in mind
that storage will only be available in the student's fall
assignment, not the summer assignment. In order to
designate your fall housing assignment as storage during this period, you
must
file a Summer Storage Period form with the Housing Office by
August 1, 2009. This form will be available online at
www.housing.caltech.edu/undergrad. In order to be eligible for this
storage period, you must properly check out of your room by
submitting your check out form online or in person at the
Housing Office. If we find you physically occupying your
room, this will be considered a violation of the Caltech Honor
Code and regular early arrival fall term charges will apply. If you
would like to either take your belongings with you or store them
elsewhere during this period, you may check out of your room
using the regular check out procedures and no fees will be
incurred.

ELIGIBILITY AND GENERAL GUIDELINES
-
Summer Housing will be extended only to those individuals who have been registered for the entire duration of the 2008-09 Spring Term, or who are currently eligible to register for the 2009-10 Fall Term, without UASH or Dean’s approval.
-
House alleys must be filled to capacity in order to remain open during the summer.
-
Individual houses will determine their own room picks guidelines and priorities including priority "settling" and "squatting".
-
Students without a Fall 2009-10 contract on file, or on the Guaranteed Housing Waiting List, may not stay past August
21, 2009.
-
Grace periods for Avery and apartment residents do not apply for the summer. If at any time between June
14th and August 21st an Avery double/triple or multi-bed apartment unit is occupied below capacity, applicable surcharges will apply.
PROCEDURES
North and South House members selecting space in their own houses and off-campus alleys:
Submission of the summer lottery form is NOT required in order to participate in affiliated house picks. Each House will coordinate its own room picks. House rules will govern this pick process. Students who select a summer room in one of the North or South Houses, or affiliated alleys, will be ineligible to participate in the summer unaffiliated housing lottery. The house officer who is coordinating this process should provide a list of people who have picked house spaces to the Housing Office by
May 18th. Names on these lists will be taken out of the unaffiliated lottery. Interested students should consult the appropriate person in your house for further information.
Students wishing to select spaces in unaffiliated housing:
Students who currently reside in or have picked a Fall 2009 space in 1170 Del Mar, portions of 150 Chester or
Marks, will have priority to select those rooms during the summer. Students who currently occupy the space (squatters) will have priority over students who picked the space for the fall (settlers) for rooms that receive requests for both. Students wishing to squat or settle into a multi-bed unit must designate their roommate(s) on the form, to be considered. If roommates are not specified, the request to squat/settle will not be considered, and the individual will have to participate in summer room picks in order to select a room. Once a request to squat/settle is verified to be available, the requestors will receive a confirmation, and will be removed from the summer lottery.
Housing lottery for all remaining Off-Campus Unaffiliated openings
Any displaced "squatters" will be placed ahead of the regular lottery participants in the order of their random number. The lottery will take place on
Wednesday, May 27th at 1:30 p.m., at the Housing Office in the Center for Student Services, building 86. During the lottery, you will select a specific housing space. Roommates must be present at the time the space is chosen, or send a proxy form with the individual picking the space.
Proxy Forms will be available at the Housing Office, or on-line at
http://housing.caltech.edu/undergrad/.

APPLICATION CERTIFICATION
I
wish to participate in the summer housing room selection process. If I
receive a room in my house or affiliated off campus alley, my name will
be automatically removed from any other lottery process. If I do not get
a space in my house, or do not participate in house picks, I will be
automatically included in the unaffiliated summer lottery.
If
this form is submitted after the deadline of May 12, 2009,
you may still participate in the lottery; however, your name will be
placed at the bottom of the unaffiliated summer lottery list on May 27,
2009. Students submitting this lottery form late will be choosing last,
and will not be able to be pulled into other housing.
